Though it seems as if this summer has been busier than normal, we managed to escape for a weekend to go camping at Clear Lake in northern California. It was the warmest camping trip I've ever been on -- I think it barely dipped into the 60s at night. We'd never been to the lake, though, and it was certainly worth it. The lake is estimated to be around 480,000 years old which probably makes it the oldest in California.

I've written before about my home brewing adventures that begun this year. Since then, we've kegged and bottled 6 batches and our 7th is lagering right now.

Because of the hops shortage of last year, it seems that many home brewers have taken it upon themselves to grow their own. A friend of ours works at a greenhouse and let us borrow some space there to grow hops. What you see above (if I remember correctly) is our nugget hops (we have three varieties growing now). Later this year I'll be building a hops dryer which I'll also be sure to share.

Last Friday was my last day of working in the City. I've accepted a job much closer to home and, though I'll miss much of the what working in the City is all about, I certainly won't miss the commute.

For the past year or so, I passed this man while walking from BART to my office. Eventually he learned my name and we'd greet each other in passing... have you ever seen that Looney Tunes cartoon with the wolf and sheepdog?

When I decided to resign, I felt obligated to tell him that I wouldn't be seeing him anymore. I think that these are the little routines that we all tend to miss when we decide to make a change in our lives. Whether it's the regular greeting of a homeless guy on the street or the Starbucks barrista who remembers your order.

So when, on my last day, while walking to BART for the last time I saw him, I had to take a picture. I didn't have my camera with me and had to use the one on my phone.

This screw happens to belong to a fan that I broke recently by accidentally knocking it off of our window sill. I tried to catch a glimpse of the relay yesterday but the route was changed and I only got to see protesters and supporters (and a whole bunch of onlookers). Still, it was a pretty cool experience.

In the process, I also gained a newfound respect for the more extreme aspects of social networking. While wondering where the torch had gone, friends and I tried searching the web with our cell phones. It seemed that the only source of data that was reliably being updated was Twitter. If we were ambitious enough (i.e. cared to spend the money on a cab), I know that we could have caught up with it.
